What’s Alfonso Cuarón been up to since his 2018 Netflix film “Roma“? Well, he’s working on his Apple TV+ thriller series “Disclaimer” at the moment, about a TV journalist who discovers that a book that features her as a character also reveals a secret she’s tried to keep hidden. That sounds excellent, especially with Cate Blanchett, Kevin Kline, and Sacha Baron Cohen starring.
But The Hollywood Reporter has the scoop on what Cuarón may work on after “Disclaimer”: a new feature for Amazon about the personal life of sci-fi author Philip K. Dick. “Jane,” named after Dick’s twin sister who died six weeks after the two were born, follows Dick throughout his endlessly troubled personal and creative life. Dick’s daughter Isa Hackett develops the project. For PKD fans, that sounds like a treat.
In addition, Charlize Theron will star in the movie as the titular twin sister. No word on who plays PKD, but Theron and Cuarón make for an exciting pairing. Theron, Cuarón, and Hackett will all co-produce the project.
The project’s description is as follows:
Jane is a moving, suspenseful and darkly humorous story about a woman’s unique relationship with her brilliant, but troubled twin, who also happens to be the celebrated novelist Philip K. Dick. While attempting to rescue her brother from predicaments both real and imagined, Jane plunges deeper and deeper into a fascinating world of his creation.
“The story of “Jane” has been with me for as long as I can remember,” said Hackett in a press release. “Jane, my father’s twin sister who died a few weeks after birth, was at the center of his universe. Befitting a man of his unique imagination, this film will defy the conventions of a biopic and embrace the alternate reality Philip K. Dick so desperately desired—one in which his beloved sister survived beyond six weeks of age. It is her story we will tell, her lens through which we will see him and his imagination. There is no better way to honor him than to grant him his wish, if only for the screen.”
PKD has been a Hollywood mainstay in his own right. Hollywood projects inspired by his work include “Blade Runner,” “Total Recall,” Amazon’s “The Man In The High Castle,” “The Adjustment Bureau,” and others.
While Cuarón is busy with “Disclaimer,” Theron has her Netflix actioner sequel, “The Old Guard: Force Multiplied,” on deck.
