Looks like there’s a big sea battle in the works. Bryan Singer has already announced he’ll direct "20,000 Leagues Under The Sea" next for 20th Century Fox, once his duties on "X-Men: Apocalypse" are all wrapped up, but Disney has their own movie inspired by the Jules Verne tale brewing.
Deadline reports that "The Wolverine" director James Mangold is sinking his claws into "Captain Nemo." This is a long brewing project at the studio, and a few years ago it was attached to David Fincher, with a script from "Se7en" scribe Andrew Kevin Walker. But creative and casting clashes saw Fincher walk away (among other things, he wanted to cast Channing Tatum in the lead, but Disney wanted Chris Hemsworth).
"You get over $200 million — all motion picture companies have corporate culture and corporate anxieties," Fincher said back in 2014. "Once we got past the list of people we could cast as the different characters in the film, once we got past one or two names which made them very comfortable, making a movie at that price, it became this bizarre endeavor to find which three names you could rub together to make platinum."
This latest iteration has a new draft of the script coming from Sebastian Gutierrez ("The Big Bounce," "Snakes On A Plane," "Electra Luxx," "The Eye"), but it’s a bit of a ways off. Mangold has the third ‘Wolverine’ movie next, and apparently there isn’t too much worry over Singer’s movie beating Disney to the punch, because "Captain Nemo" will apparently be an origin story. Of course.
That comment is such a useless contribution to a relatively unremarkable story.
I bet they\’re gonna try to make it their new Pirates of the C…Mangold is the same level of hack as Gore Verbinski was (is).
