Got a Tip?

James Gunn Says He Will “For Sure” Work With ‘The Suicide Squad’ Star Margot Robbie Again

Ever since it was revealed that James Gunn and Peter Safran, the co-CEOs of DC Studios, would be doing a bit of a soft reboot on the DCU (keeping only a handful of actors while recasting nearly all of the major roles), there has been a barrage of questions from fans about who is staying and who is leaving. Henry Cavill? Gone. Ben Affleck? Definitely gone. What about Gal Gadot? Ezra Miller? Jason Momoa? Unsure. However, there, at least, appears to be a possibility that Margot Robbie could survive the purge.

On Twitter, where James Gunn is very online and responsive, a fan asked the filmmaker if he’d work with Margot Robbie again, after the two collaborated on “The Suicide Squad.” In no uncertain terms, Gunn replied, “For sure.”

Now, it would be silly to assume Gunn is saying that Robbie will definitely reprise her role as Harley Quinn in a future DCU film. Obviously, Gunn could have simply meant that somewhere down the line, perhaps in 25 years, they will collaborate on a family drama with no superheroes to be found. But with the next decade or more seemingly all tied into DC projects for Mr. Gunn, it’s a distinct possibility he means Robbie will show up in the new DCU.

Does this mean Harley Quinn is going to return? Not necessarily. As has been stated quite a bit in the discourse surrounding the soft reboot of the DCU, it’s hard to know exactly what to expect. Jason Momoa could return as Aquaman, but it seems as if he’ll possibly show up as a completely different character. And same goes for Cavill, who Gunn has said has discussed other characters. All that to say, the confusion about what characters are staying and which ones are being rebooted has led to simple comments about Margot Robbie working with Gunn in the future being interpreted in a million different ways.

So, after dissecting a two-word answer for multiple paragraphs, let’s just come to this conclusion—James Gunn will work with Margot Robbie in the future. It might be in the DCU, but it might not be. It might be as Harley Quinn, but it could be a different role. We’ll now go back to checking James Gunn’s Twitter for answers, already in progress.
