This Tuesday, one of the biggest movies of all time, “Titanic,” is finally heading to blu-ray, and James Cameron is hitting the press circuit for the second time this year and he’s sounding off on Kate Winslet’s complicated relationship with the blockbuster film, as well as what’s in store after “Avatar 2” and “Avatar 3.”
Despite the fact that production hasn’t even started on the first two sequels to 2009’s 3D blockbuster “Avatar,” Cameron has already started floating ideas for a fourth sequel. In an interview with MTV, the Canadian director said he envisions “Avatar 4” as a sort-of prequel that would go “back to the early expeditions of Pandora, and kind of what went wrong with the humans and the Na’vi and what that like to be an explorer and living in that world.” Although “Avatar” 2 & 3 will be shot back-to-back, the 4th film would come much later.
How much later? Well, according to producer Jon Landau (via Swedish site Moviezine), it would come after the long-discussed adaptation of Yukito Kishiro’s “Battle Angel” graphic novel series. Landau told the site “I am confident you will see it. It's one of my favorite stories, I think it is an incredible story, a journey of self-discovery of a young woman. It is a movie that begs the question: "What does it mean to be human? Are you human if you have a heart, are you human if you have a mind, are you human if you have a soul?" And I look forward to bringing that film to audiences," adding, "We'll focus on Avatar for the next four or five years, hopefully right after that."
Regarding Cameron’s other blockbuster film, “Titanic”, Winslet made no secret of her anxiousness regarding the film’s re-release earlier this year, saying that she “wasn’t really a very good actress” at the time of the original release and was mortified at her younger self on screen. In an interview with Moviefone Cameron cut the Academy Award-winning actress some slack, saying he understood “her needing to distance herself from . . . [the] long shadow” of the “big, iconic role” but that he “didn’t necessarily agree with it. . . It’s been 16 years, like, come on, Kate. Get over it. “Titanic” comes out on 3D blu-ray tomorrow, and the 3D Blu-ray Collector’s Edition of “Avatar” is available next month on October 16th.
TITANIC actually came out today, as they likely felt it was inappropriate to release a film in which over a thousand people die on 9/11. Likewise, THE GAME, which was due to come out tomorrow, was moved, as its cover features a man jumping off a building.
And that's when you realize how O-U-T-S-T-A-N-D-I-N-G-L-Y charismatic Leonardo Di Caprio is. This guy in the screen test is technically good, has a good voice, doesn't overact, seems actually quite natural, takes his time, has real moments with her… Everything they teach you in an acting class… Like he could easily be the best student of his class and book lots of gigs, and Im sure he has a thick theater backrgound. Yet, you put Leo next to him doing the same scene, and he [the guy in the screentest] just looks like a clown and loses his credibility as an actor. There's something about Leo that enlightens a scene, that brings dream, perfection, greatness. Especially in films like Titanic, The Aviator, Catch Me If You Can and Romeo And Juliette. You can cast Tom Cruise instead of Will Smith, and vice versa (Except in Ali 😉 but Leo is not interchangeable. He's not just another star, he's a unique asset to the movie industry. And James Cameron, who is an equally unique and irreplaceable, asset to the industry, had understood that and that's why he insisted to get him. That collaboration has to be the best collaboration in film history. Two Titans uniting to execute a titanic film… simply call Titanic.
