Josh Brolin is an actor that picks and chooses his screen roles very wisely. He prefers to work with top-tier directors like Joel and Ethan Coen, Spike Lee, Denis Villeneuve, Paul Thomas Anderson, Gus Van Sant and Ridley Scott. James Cameron should, by all means, be considered part of that elite list, even if he’s basically dedicating his current filmmaking career solely to making “Avatar” and its upcoming four sequels.
Even as many have questioned the need for the films, Cameron has promised innovation with the four new “Avatar” sequels. I, of course, would rather have him concentrate on new stories and characters that have nothing to do with that world, but that’s just me — Cameron absolutely loves pushing the technical limitations in his films, and with “Avatar” he’s found the perfect vehicle. However, Cameron and “Avatar” has its fans, but just don’t count Josh Brolin as one of them.
According to Brolin, in a recently published interview with Esquire, he apparently fought with Cameron over the upcoming “Avatar” sequels. Brolin turned down a prominent role in Cameron’s films, which had the 62-year-old Canadian director fuming.
“If I don’t want to do ‘Avatar,’ I’m not going to do ‘Avatar.’ James Cameron’s f—ing calling me this name and that name. Whatever. If James Cameron came to me and said, ‘Hey, man, why’d you say that?’ I’d go, ‘Because it happened,’ ” said Brolin.
Yikes. It seems like Brolin turning down the role might have burst Cameron’s ego bubble a bit. Whatever the case, the actor doesn’t want any part of Cameron’s universe. Do you blame him? He already has another universe to deal with as Thanos in the Marvel movies, and is also in the middle of shooting the upcoming sequel to “Deadpool,” where he will be playing Cable. A lot is happening in Brolin’s world, none of which has to do with the Na’vi and Pandora. Meanwhile, with Cameron’s “Avatar” sequels, it feels like it’s come to the point where by the time the movies are actually released, nobody is really going to care anymore.
Every few days for years now hear about how no one even thinks about Avatar anymore.
Hmm.
Are you saying that the sequel to the highest grossing movie of all time will be just… ignored… by the public just because it has been longer than usual between films?
By that logic… the gap between Star Wars : Revenge of The Sith (a blockbuster but by no means a historic success) and Star Wars : The Force Awakens should have bankrupted Disney.
I get that you don’t care about Avatar or James Cameron. Trust me, I don’t see the appeal of Avatar either. But if you really think people won’t flock to see his next movie in droves and make it a gargantuan hit – you are an idiot.
Well I mean, Zoe Saldana already has the MCU and she’s part of the Avatar films. So she’s got a lot going on too. But still I agree with you. I have zero interest for more Avatar. I feel like Cameron probably had a vision of him as a character and when he rejected him that screwed up said vision.
Is Josh Brolin basically saying he turned down the role because it was offered to him in the first place? I’m asking because I’m having trouble deciphering, “‘Hey man, what’d you say that?’ I said ‘Because it happened.'”
Good riddens.
Cameron deserves the best because he’s the best.
(how’s that for narcissistic supply?)
