Got a Tip?

Survey Shows Americans Are Okay With A Black James Bond But Not A Female Or Gay Version

We are still more than a year away from Daniel Craig’s swansong as superspy James Bond in “Bond 25.” That film only just recently got back on track after Danny Boyle’s departure, and eventual hiring of “True Detective” director Cary Fukunaga. But even still, people can’t get enough talk about who should play the next James Bond after Craig. And according to a new survey, Americans are okay with just about anyone, as long as Bond isn’t gay, Hispanic, Asian, and female. Oh boy.

Survey company Morning Consult recently teamed up with THR to conduct a survey of Americans and how they feel about James Bond. Of the topics being surveyed, the question of who should replace Daniel Craig is perhaps the most interesting.

Unsurprisingly, perhaps, 63% (only 21% opposed) of those surveyed said they would approve of Idris Elba being cast in the role. That is even after the actor himself has struck down those rumors. But when the casting question broke it down by ethnicity, gender, and sexual orientation, Americans started to show that they’re just fine with white male James Bond.

As for the ethnicity that American approve of most to take over for Craig (probably thanks to Idris Elba) is a Black James Bond. With 52% support and only 29% oppose, the idea of a Black James Bond was easily the most favorable of the minorities. Coming in second is Hispanic with 39% support and 39% oppose. This is followed by Asian and female tying with 37% support. However, way more Americans are opposed to a female Bond than an Asian Bond (48% versus 41%, respectively).

All that being said, the worst possible outcome for the new James Bond, according to the survey, is a gay version of the character. With only 28% of those Americans saying they’d support the move and a whopping 52% majority saying they oppose, the idea of a gay James Bond definitely ruffles some feathers.

The survey also broke down the films and other previous James Bond actors in terms of favorability. As for the films, “Goldfinger” is the most favorable film out of the entire series, with “The Living Daylights” coming in last. Surprisingly (or not, I suppose), Craig’s last film “Spectre” was the second-worst out of the list, narrowly beating ‘Daylights.’

And on the acting side of things, Sean Connery easily led the pack with a 82% favorable impression rating. It’s almost unfair, but George Lazenby (the forgotten Bond) came in last place with 31% favorable. Daniel Craig finished #4, only beating Timothy Dalton and Lazenby.

“Bond 25” is scheduled to hit theaters on February 14, 2020.
