J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot has a lot of plates on the stove right now, from “Star Trek 4” to a live-action “Hotwheels” movie to numerous TV shows in development for HBO Max and AppleTV+. And they’re seemingly already really testing the patience of Warner Bros. Discovery that isn’t too happy they got a sweet $250 million exclusive deal to make HBO Max content and haven’t really produced jack so far. Well, let’s hope there’s another burner open because another Bad Robot project got announced today: a live-action “Speed Racer” TV series for Apple.
The Hollywood Reporter announced that Hiram Martinez, known for his work “Snowpiercer” and “Get Shorty,” will team up with Ron Fitzgerald of HBO‘s “Westworld” to co-write and be co-showrunners for the new series. Fitzgerald and Abrams already work together on “Westworld,” but it’s the first time either will work with Martinez. In addition, all three will be executive producers, with Abrams doing so under the Bad Robot banner. The show will be part of Bad Robot’s overall deal with Warner Bros. Television.
The show, apparently in the works for years, is the first take on “Speed Racer” since the Wachowskis‘ 2008 cult film starring Emile Hirsch. “Speed Racer, ” created by Tatsuo Yoshida, was first adapted as an anime show in the 1960s. Nickelodeon produced a short-lived American remake in 2002, six years before the Wachowskis’ take on the character.
“Speed Racer” marks another show Abrams has in the works with AppleTV+. Two have already premiered: “Lisey’s Story” and “Little Voice.” And two more are in the pipeline: “My Glory Was I Had Such Friends,” starring Jennifer Garner, and “Presumed Innocent.” Meanwhile, Abrams and Bad Robot have a slew of shows upcoming on HBO Max, including “Batman: Caped Crusader,” “Demimonde,” and more. “Demimonde,” Abram’s first show as a creator since 2008’s “Fringe,” is a sci-fi fantasy epic with a budget that may soar over $200 million–if it goes into production.
There are lots of projects going on through Bad Robot right now, this new “Speed Racer” show among them. But how many will make it to production and release? We’ll have to stay tuned as J.J. Abrams attempts to juggle all these plates.
