This spring it was announced that "The Hurt Locker" and "Zero Dark Thirty" team, Kathryn Bigelow and Mark Boal, were moving ahead with their film about POW Bowe Bergdahl, with Megan Ellison backing the project. That meant their long developing "Triple Frontier" was put on the backburner, but it looks like it’s moving again. This time, however, with another director attached.
J.C. Chandor saw his slate open up after exiting Mark Wahlberg starrer "Deepwater Horizon," but he’s landing on his feet in a big way by eyeing taking over "Triple Frontier," which is still running with Boal’s script. Once knocking around town under the title "Sleeping Dogs," the story that takes place in the notorious, titular border zone between Paraguay, Argentina and Brazil called ‘la triple frontera,’ where the Igazu and Parana rivers converge, making it a haven for crime that’s difficult to monitor. The script was so hot that big names like Tom Hanks, Johnny Depp, Sean Penn, Will Smith, Javier Bardem and Christian Bale, were rumored or linked at various points over the years, and two of them — Hanks and Smith — are apparently still circling the movie that has five lead roles, according to Deadline.
The project is still at Paramount, who once balked at making the movie due to its $80 million budget, and at one time both Argentinian and Paraguayan officials denounced the movie even before a script was finished.
So, we’ll see if this one gets any closer to happening, but it is heartening to see this calibre of talent forming around the movie.
