With “Knight and Day” opening to a barely solid $20.5 mil this past weekend ($27 mil over 5 days), while some people might be questioning Tom Cruise’s box office draw, it should be noted that films like “Collateral” ($25 mil) and “Jerry Maguire” ($17 mil) also started small only to pick up after a few weeks at the box office. Undoubtedly, those in the Cruise camp will be asking questions and perhaps, a return to one of his early successes might be the key to unlock the domestic box office love once again.
Speaking with MTV, uber-producer Jerry Bruckheimer dropped a few details about a possible sequel to the chest-thumping, shirtless-volleyball-playing affair that was “Top Gun.” Apparently, he has been approached about making a sequel and is open to the idea of developing a film centering around Maverick (that’s Tom Cruise’s character for the uninitiated). “We were recently approached again to start talking about it but, you know, nothing yet,” Bruckheimer said. He added, “We kicked around some ideas because the aviation community has completely changed since we made the movie a long time ago. So we have to find a way in and how to incorporate the Maverick character into it.”
Will audiences stomach seeing an aging Tom Cruise piloting supersonic jets and romancing an actress likely twenty years his junior? We’ve yet to see where this one goes but it when it comes to aviation and fancy military gadgets, Michael Bay had better be involved. Incidentally, here is a clip of Quentin Tarantino explaining how “Top Gun” is actually an allegory for a man’s battle with his conflicted sexuality. Enjoy!
If the tracking data Nikki Finke posted for Sorcerer's don't improve, Bruckheimer will have a 2nd disappointing fantasy film so maybe he's scrambling for ideas. Cruise certainly needs a bit of change as well, but Top Gun 2?
Cruise should've done the Matarese Circle with Cronenberg. Top Gun 2 and the Les Grosmann movie sound both really desperate attempts to please the audience with something that worked once.
Also Bruno Dumont once said that he'd like to make his version of a Hollywood movie with Tom Cruise starring – I believe the script is called "The End". I'd like to see that one happening, although it's highly unlikely.
Christ. It looks like QT went the "gay way" at the end of that clip.
