Is the Luc Besson-produced “Colombiana, ” starring Zoe Saldana, the closest we’ll get to ever seeing a sequel to the “The Professional” (“Léon”)? From the sounds of this interview with “Columbiana” director Olivier Megaton it sure seems like it.
Called, “Mathilda,” the script for the sequel, is complete. Natalie Portman still wants to make the movie, in fact, everybody involved is in, everyone except the studio that controls the rights to the story. “Colombiana” sounds like an unofficial work around and it center’s on Saldana’s grown-up character as she seeks revenge for the murder of her parents when she was a child. Michael Vartan recently joined the cast as well. [ScreenRant]
Director Chris Wedge’s WedgeWorks has acquired the rights to the awesomely titled, “Lives of The Monster Dogs.” Adam Kline, best known for the animated “Ice Age” films might make it his live-action debut. The book is evidently a postmodern “Frankenstein”-style novel and how is this image not totally amazing and a movie you would pay to see? [THR]
Celebrated anime director Hayao Miyazaki (“Spirited Away,” “Ponyo”) may be planning a sequel to “Porco Rosso.” [/Film]
Here’s a match made in heaven. Dolly Parton and Queen Latifah will team up in the music-driven film “Joyful Noise,” which will be about two singers trying to save a choir. [THR]
“The Lottery Ticket” star and occasional rapper/musician Bow Wow wants to play ’70s downtown New York artist Jean-Michel Basquiat one day. He’s so cute. [DigitalSpy]
As much as I'd love to spend more time in the world of "Porco Rosso," I fear a sequel would detract from its beautiful, ambiguous ending.
Also: "Lives of the Monster Dogs" sounds like the fictional novel Liev Schreiber's character is writing (and gleefully describes) in the movie "The Daytrippers."
