Got a Tip?

Is Darren Aronofksy Still On Board ‘RoboCop’ After All?

At a recent screening of “The Wolf Man,” writer David Self has provided a small update on Darren Aronofksy’s long-gestating “RoboCop.”

“I’m still involved with it and Darren Aronofsky’s still involved with it,” says the scribe. “He’s making another movie right now (“Black Swan”), but we’re waiting for MGM, to sort things out since they’re a large corporation and it’s a situation where we have to be practical. We’re waiting to continue with them, we hope that that happens soon and we can get back to it soon.”

Doesn’t exactly sound exactly optimistic about the project’s prospects but seems like Aronofksy is still attached, however loosely that may be. Last we heard, there was word of a standoff between the director and studio regarding the film’s potential for 3D, a concept Aronofksy has openly criticized.

On top of that, MGM hasn’t exactly been swimming in profits and have even been noted to have “put out feelers for other directors” as early as last July. Aronofsky, meanwhile, signed up to helm an indie-heist thriller that September. Aronofksy’s gritty visions of reboots and origin stories have already seen him lose his pre-Nolan ‘Batman’ reboot (too dark, too un-studio) so it won’t surprise us if this never comes to fruition with his name on it (MGM probably want to turn it into a franchise with commercial appeal).

Self does go on to confirm though the project is not a remake or sequel of sorts revealing that “it’s an origin story, it’s an origin to the original ‘Robocop.’ So, it’s basically a ‘reboot.’ ” Cue a better-suited studio pawn director? We personally hope so.
