‘Iron Fist’ Star Finn Jones Punches Back At Critics, Says Show Was Made For Fans

This weekend, Marvel fans will be staying in and bingeing the latest offering from Netflix with “Iron Fist,” however, it might be the first time the comic brand and streaming service have hugely missed the mark. Early reviews arrived last week, and they were brutal, with the series coming under fire for the handling of its racial elements, to just being plain boring. However, the show’s star Finn Jones isn’t going down without a fight.

Talking with Metro, he defended “Iron Fist,” and played the familiar card that it’s a series that’s for fans, and not for stuffy, know-nothing critics, who probably had an agenda when they sat down to watch it.

“Well I think there’s multiple factors. What I will say is these shows are not made for critics, they are first and foremost made for the fans,” Jones said. “I also think some of the reviews we saw were seeing the show through a very specific lens, and I think when the fans of the Marvel Netflix world and fans of the comic books view the show through the lens of just wanting to enjoy a superhero show, then they will really enjoy what they see.”

Long story short: don’t think too hard, just enjoy! That’s a fairly flimsy defense, but I guess we’ll see what the fans have to say when the series lands on Friday. [Vulture]

  1. some of the complaints are way off base. This is being made from a source material and they’re trying to be ‘somewhat’ loyal to it rather than reinventing it (which usually pisses off more fans than it appeases the casual fans) so complaining about skin colour or background story is inane. Those aspects were set over 30 years ago…

  2. Years ago when I was editing the Super Bowl TV Spot for Star Trek (09), we were discussing fan service and whether or not to include a shot of the Enterprise or a shot of Spock. They’re thought was that the fans were already going to see the movie so we did’t have to appeal to them. It was the non-Trek fans that they wanted to appeal to. They did of course end up appealing to both fans and non-fans as I believe all shows and movies based on a show or a comic book are trying to do. This idea that a studio would invest millions of dollars just to make something for people who are already going to watch it is both ridiculous and kind of insulting. It’s also insulting to think that critics are going into something not wanting to like it. That is just a flat out lie.
