Look, there are no two ways about it. The first season of Netflix/Marvel’s “Iron Fist” is bad. Like really bad. But it’s been about a year and a half since that first season killed fan anticipation and had people thinking, “Maybe this whole Netflix/Marvel deal isn’t so great, after all.” And now, “Iron Fist” is back and the series is hoping you take a look at it with new eyes because it’s not just the cast that you remember from the first outing.
If there’s anything in this new season 2 trailer that can give viewers optimism that Marvel TV has learned from its previous mistakes, it’s the additions of “Luke Cage’s” Simone Missick, aka Misty Knight, and the reintroduction of Davos from season 1, given the boost that many hoped would have been in last year’s episodes. Misty Knight is welcomed into the series as she teams up with Colleen Wing in a clear nod to comic book fans hoping to see a “Daughters of the Dragon” spin-off. Plus, considering that Knight and Wing are some of the best aspects of their respective series, this isn’t such a bad idea.
But the real star of the new trailer is none other than Sacha Dhawan, aka Davos, aka Steel Serpent. The actor, who was seen in a handful of season 1 episodes, is back and this time he’s the antagonist that fans have been asking for. In the comics, Steel Serpent is the joker to Iron Fist’s Batman, and hopefully, the villain can carry this new season. However, all that being said, if the footage in the trailer is any indication, his main character trait is to use his red fist to punch holes in things.
Believe it or not, there’s a lot riding on this new season of “Iron Fist.” Unlike the previous season, which was mainly viewed as a disappointment compared to other Marvel shows, season 2 is anticipated as a hopeful correcting of the course for the Netflix superhero universe. Subsequent seasons of “Jessica Jones,” “Luke Cage,” and “Defenders” have shown that the Marvel shows are struggling, and now, “Iron Fist” is here to hopefully show that the studio can learn the error of its ways. Or maybe this whole “Iron Fist” experiment was a bad idea to begin with?
“Iron Fist” season 2 debuts on Netflix on September 7.
