Much of the discussion around foreign-language films in 2019 has revolved around projects like “Parasite,” “Les Miserables,” and “Portrait of a Lady on Fire.” And while those films are worthy of praise, film fans need to make sure they add “Invisible Life” to that discourse, as the Brazilian drama demands to be included in the discussion for best films of the year.
And in honor of “Invisible Life” arriving in theaters this week, we have an exclusive clip from the drama that shows just why the Amazon Studios film is likely going to find itself with plenty of awards recognition. The clip features a young woman being kicked out of her family home by her father. While it’s out of context, the clip gives a good peek at the incredible acting and emotional story that’s on display in the film. “Invisible Life” aims to tell a story of family struggles, sibling love, and the desire to strike out on your own as an adult.
We saw the film earlier this year and, in our review, we said, “‘Invisible Life’ is a transporting story of inner lives struggling to express themselves in a society that is as visually lush as it is rigid. French cinematographer Hélène Louvart proves to be an ace in the hole behind the camera on ‘Invisible Life,’ rendering the digital compositions both immediately naturalistic and immaculately composed.”

The film stars Carol Duarte, Julia Stockler, and Fernanda Montenegro. Karim Aïnouz, who is probably best known for his films “Madame Satã” and “Futuro Beach,” wrote and directed the drama.

Rio de Janeiro, 1950. Eurídice, 18, and Guida, 20, are two inseparable sisters living at home with their conservative parents. Although immersed in a traditional life, each one nourishes a dream: Eurídice of becoming a renowned pianist, Guida of finding true love. In a dramatic turn, they are separated by their father and forced to live apart. They take control of their separate destinies, while never giving up hope of finding each other. A tropical melodrama from the director of Madame Satã.
