‘Informer’ Trailer: Paddy Considine & Bel Powley Star In BBC’s Answer To ‘The Wire’ From Sam Mendes

The BBC has been on a roll this year with diverse and exciting police dramas with “Collateral” to “Killing Eve” and now “Informer.”

As a co-writer of the show, Iranian born Sohrab Noshirvani was adamant that showcasing the face of London today was important, saying, “We wanted that diversity to be normal on-screen – not suburban ‘normal’ but recognizable. It is just time for new stories.”

“Why not bring the diversity to the heart of a story and make it reflect London accurately?” co-writer Rory Haines added.

And, based off the synopsis below, this is definitely a story we haven’t seen before:

“Informer” follows Raza, a young, second-generation Pakistani man from East London who is coerced by Gabe, a Counter-Terrorism officer to go undercover and inform for him. Gabe, who has a past he is unwilling to expose, is joined by Holly, his new and ambitious partner whose endless curiosity becomes threatening to him. As the central counterterrorism investigation heats up, the stakes for all three get higher and higher.

Given the secretive nature of undercover work, it’s no surprise that “Informer” will lack the typical action and violence of typical cop procedurals. Haines cited “The Wire” as a major influence on properly capturing the “identity and duplicity” themes. “We don’t have guys running around with guns. That feels dated and is not true. So nobody is ever running towards a ticking bomb. And it is funny. The characters in our show don’t realize that they are in a thriller, which we always tried to bear in mind,” Noshirvani also stated

“Informer” stars Paddy Considine, Bel Powley, Jessica Raine, and newcomer Nabhaan Rizwan in his television debut. Handling directing duties for all six episodes is “Westworld” and Doctor Who” director Johnny Campbell. And, to top it all off, “Skyfall” and “Spectre” director Sam Mendes is one of the executive producers.

“Informer” is set to premiere stateside on Amazon Prime after an October airdate on BBC One.
