Just last week, it was reported that Apple TV+ is expected to send “Killers of the Flower Moon” to this year’s Cannes. While that has yet to be confirmed, a new report from Variety throws some more films into the mix as possible additions to this year’s event. And yes, it appears Cannes is embracing the blockbuster, yet again.

The report continues to fuel the notion that Martin Scorsese’s long-awaited “Killers of the Flower Moon” is being eyed for a Cannes premiere. However, that’s not the only major American film being considered. It appears that Lucasfilm is looking at possibly debuting “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” in France, as well. This isn’t completely shocking when you consider that the previous ‘Indiana Jones’ film, ‘Kingdom of the Crystal Skull,’ debuted at Cannes way back in 2008.
Also of no real surprise is the news that Focus Features is likely sending “Asteroid City,” one of two films coming from Wes Anderson in 2023, to Cannes. The filmmaker’s most recent feature, “The French Dispatch,” debuted there back in 2021, and that led to quite a bit of buzz and acclaim for the film. Let’s be real, the French folks love Wes Anderson.

Outside of American films, it appears a couple of major Asian filmmakers are possibly headed to Cannes this year, as well. First, there’s “Monster” by acclaimed filmmaker Hirokazu Kore-eda. And possibly joining that film is Hayao Miyazaki’s much-anticipated, “How Do You Live?” And it wouldn’t be a Cannes without some major French debuts. This year, it looks like Maïwenn’s “Jeanne du Barry,” which stars Johnny Depp, could premiere at the event. Rounding out the international debuts that are rumored, there’s also Nuri Bilge Ceylan’s “About Dry Grasses.”
Obviously, this is not an exhaustive list of definite Cannes debuts. There are still likely some surprises that will get unveiled when Cannes makes its formal announcement. But, even with these possibilities, it does appear that 2023 is going to be another star-studded year for the prestigious event.
The 2023 Cannes Film Festival begins on May 16.
