Four months removed from its Sundance premiere, Michael Mohan’s “Save The Date” has finally landed a North American distribution deal with IFC Films. This is the second high-profile release the distributor has picked up in as many weeks, recently having brokered a deal to release Walter Salles’ adaptation of the landmark Jack Kerouac novel, “On The Road” which is set to premiere next week at the Cannes Film Festival.
Mohan co-wrote the script with Egan Reich and acclaimed graphic-novelist, Jeffrey Brown, and it’s an endearing romantic comedy (read our review here, and an interview with Mohan here) that stars Lizzy Caplan (“Party Down”) as a young woman adrift in the aftermath of a failed relationship and in the throes of a rebound during the runup to her sister’s wedding. “Save The Date” also stars Alison Brie (“Community,” “Mad Men”), Martin Starr (“Party Down”), Mark Webber, and Geoffrey Arend.
There’s no word yet on when the film will be released, but it’s likely to hit either this fall or early next year. Whatever the release date, it’s good news for Mohan, who had this to say: “When I was in college, if a movie poster had the IFC Films logo on it, I would go see it. Didn’t matter what the film was — I always knew I was going to be in for something thought provoking. One of these films was ‘Together,’ a film I knew absolutely nothing about when I walked into the theatre, but quickly grew to be one of my all time favorite films. Being exposed to [Lukas] Moodysson’s early work was a huge inspiration to me and my work – the visual style of ‘Save The Date’ was absolutely informed by it — and that’s because of IFC. So it’s not only a real honor that we’ll have that stamp on our film, I also just love to think maybe some dorky kid who wants to make movies will now be able to find ‘Save The Date’ and see something in it that might inspire them.”
