With Steven Spielberg opining that superhero movies will eventually go the way of the western, and given that Universal dominated the summer box office without one single comic book character, some might argue that superheroes aren’t solely the kings of the blockbuster heap anymore. In fact, perhaps some audiences are getting a bit weary of a new spandex suited hero coming along every couple of months, if not on the big screen, then on television. And that’s not to mention the rapid reboots of name brand characters, and Emma Thompson for one, is getting a bit tired of it.
“I loved the original ‘Superman‘ with Chris Reeve because there was a real tongue-in-cheek-ness to it,” she told Vulture when asked about the proliferation of comic book flicks. “After a while, you do get a tiny bit cynical about it. The fact that I know they’re going to win out in the end has now slightly interfered with my continuing to go to those movies. If I see yet another ‘Spider-Man,’ I’m going to have to actually hang myself. I can’t do it anymore! They’re all marvelous, but how many times can you make this franchise, for crying out loud?”
Sing it, Emma. But there is one superhero movie she admits she’ll queue up for: “I’m up for ‘Wonder Woman,’ totally.”
If you buy the tickets Emma, we’ll get the popcorn.
If I ever have to see another Nanny McPhee movie again I\’ll bludgeon myself to death with a brick…
Soooo, she really wants to do a superhero movie, but one where she won\’t be embarrassed about when she\’s around her Royal Shakespeare Company cronies.
Grrrrrrrrrrreeeeeeaaaaat!!!!!
LOL I love that woman!
