The Costume Design Guild announced the 22nd Costume Designer Guild Awards nominations this morning and there were a number of expected nominees. For instance, Michael Travers work for “Hustlers,” Ruth E. Carter’s creations for “Dolemite is My Name” and Julian Day‘s nominations for “Rocketman” were not surprises when the three different film categories were revealed. What was unexpected were the two major designers who didn’t make the cut for their high profile films this year.

Sandy Powell, who won last year for “The Favourite” and has a career achievement award from the guild, did not make the cut for “The Irishman” alongside fellow designer Christopher Peterson. Mark Bridges, who is a seven-time nominee, was snubbed for his work on “Joker” and “Marriage Story.” To say that is strange considering there are 15 slots to fill is an understatement.
On the television side the results were slightly more expected. This year, designers had to submit just one episode for consideration instead of their whole body of work on a show (if that was the case). Notable nominees included Marina Toybina for “The Masked Singer” in the Reality category, Joyce Schure giving “Carnival Row” its first guild nod anywhere and Debra Hanson earning a nod for the iconic “Schitt’s Creek” episode, “The Dress.”
The winner will be announced in a ceremony on Jan 28, 2020 hosted by Mindy Kaling.
