Australian actor Hugo Weaving must have a penchant for masks, wasting his time and or just decent pay days. In “V For Vendetta” he did an admirable job of playing the central mysterious freedom fighter wearing nothing more than creepy, clown-like, mask that totally obscured his face, and in the “Transformers” franchise he voices the antagonist Megatron, but has admitted to never seeing the films (or expressing much desire to see them).
Now, after several protracted weeks of negotiations that lead some to wonder if he’d ever take the role, Weaving has finally been confirmed by Marvel Studios to play the main villain in “Captain America: The First Avenger,” the Red Skull (cause his skull is red, get it?)
Weaving will star alongside Chris Evans, Hayley Atwell, Sebastian Stan, Samuel L. Jackson and more cast members to be revealed soon enough (Cap shoots this summer in Europe). We get his thinking though. When taking on a picture that’s directed by Joe Johnston, a mask is a good way to hide yourself from embarrassment. We’ve been all for the Marvel films so far, but it remains to be seen if this one will be up to similar snuff and Steve Rodgers is frankly one of the more blander, milquetoast characters in the Marvel universe.
