By now, a lot of film fans have experienced the over-the-top ridiculousness of ‘Hobbs & Shaw.’ The first ‘Fast & Furious’ spin-off is chock full of massive action scenes, bulging biceps, and corny dialogue that has become a bit of a staple in the franchise. And that sense of ludicrousness has bled over into the cameos that appear in the film.
**Spoilers for a couple of cameos in ‘Hobbs & Shaw’**
If you’ve seen the film, you know that Ryan Reynolds and Kevin Hart are the surprise supporting stars of the film, showing up multiple times to inject some extra humor in the already silly film. But according to a new interview with THR, director David Leitch considers the appearances more than just cameos. In fact, he thinks that these two actors could join the franchise in a more official role down the road.
“I totally do,” said Leitch. “That’s a movie I know I want to see. It’s certainly a movie I want to make. When you can combine real heart and soul — like we do in the ‘Fast’ movies — as Hobbs and Shaw are reconnecting with their families, that’s something everyone can relate to.”
He continued, “Then, there’s this undeniable comedic talent that’s providing great levity as we go on this classic spy plot that allows for these big set pieces. It’s a really good formula to have fun, and that was my intention. I hope that people respond to it.”
One of the faces that many hoped would show up in the film that never panned out is Keanu Reeves. Obviously, with their mutual “John Wick” connection, Leitch and Reeves have a long history. But as the director explained, there was just no pressing need to have the actor show up in the first film. That being said, if Reeves does join the franchise, they pretty much have the role all figured out.
“We started to populate the movie with all these other personalities, and I just didn’t really think that we needed it, although I would’ve loved it,” said Leitch. “We even talked in post, and I showed him a rough cut of the movie. Then, we had conversations about ‘is there something here?’ We came to the conclusion of ‘let’s put a pin in it.’ I’m all for finding opportunities, but I also didn’t want to force anything. The mystery at the end of the movie where the Eteon director is nameless and faceless seems perfect for our ending because we had so much story we’ve already told.”
As for who might occupy the role in future installments, the director said “no final decision” has been made. So those hoping that Reeves might still show up in a sequel, there’s still a chance. Otherwise, there’s a pretty prime villain role in the ‘Hobbs & Shaw’ universe that would be pretty great for just about any actor in Hollywood.
