‘Hitchcock’ Gets Nifty Old School Poster

So, how has the Oscar race changed since last night's unveiling of the "unfinished" "Lincoln" at the New York Film Festival? Not much, except that Steven Spielberg's historical drama might not be the multiple-category, firebreathing contender some said it was on paper. Best Picture, Supporting Actor, Director and perhaps Adapted Screenplay noms seem a lock, but even they do not look guaranteed as wins, not even Daniel Day-Lewis whose subtler turn might not be the showy performance voters expect. So, who could steal this thunder? How about Anthony Hopkins as Alfred Hitchcock in "Hitchcock"?

With Fox Searchlight barreling the movie into the awards season race, it certainly promises a range of interesting performances, but none more so than the lead, in a movie where it isn't his eccentricities being pushed, but the love for his wife, particularly as it was tested during the making of "Psycho." “I think Alma accepts Hitch for exactly who he is and knows his idiosyncrasies and his crazy predilections,” director Sacha Gervasi tells EW. “She allows him to have his obsessions and I think our movie is about a point where they sort of escalate. Their marriage is absolutely touched off by his increasing obsessions with these women, but they were ultimately fantasy relationships. Hitch lived in this world of fantasy; to him it was more real than real life. And I think Alma was able to kind of, in this film at least, smash it down a little bit.”

But of course, being a movie set during Hollywood's classic cinematic age, means the marketing will push that as well, and this new poster is a pretty great nod to the thriller one-sheets of yore. "Hitchcock" opens the AFI Fest on November 1st and hits theaters on November 23rd.
