Forty years have passed since Martin Scorsese and Robert De Niro paired up and delivered one of their finest achievements with “Taxi Driver.” Shot in a New York City that is much different than it is today, the film reverberated with the pain of the Vietnam War, and was cloaked in the grime of the city that never sleeps. And now it’s returning to the big screen.
To celebrate its 40th anniversary, “Taxi Driver” is headed back to theaters, with screenings launching Austria and Switzerland this month, with Europe, Latin America and Australia to follow. Keep your fingers crossed it hits U.S. screens too. Here’s the official synopsis:
An alienated, battle-scarred loner embarks on a mission of misguided revenge in the seedy underbelly of night-time Manhattan.
Swathed in biblical allusion, Martin Scorsese’s seminal Vietnam vet freak-out movie made a star of Robert De Niro and improbably turned Calvinist screenwriter Paul Schrader into the hottest screenwriter in America for a short time. It received four Academy Award nominations (including Best Picture) and won the Golden Palm Award at the Cannes Film Festival. “You talkin’ to me?”
