Like a scab it can’t stop picking, Hollywood is hellbent on getting a “Highlander” remake off the ground. For years they’ve tried, with Justin Lin, Juan Carlos Fresnadillo, Ryan Reynolds and Tom Cruise all in the soup of potential talent over the years, but it’s a been a while since there’s been any new word. Well, the property is getting a new shot at getting remade with a director who is currently hot in Hollywood thanks to his action chops.
Chad Stahelski, the co-helmer of “John Wick” and the only man behind the camera for the forthcoming “John Wick: Chapter Two,” is now set for “Highlander,” which Lionsgate wants to turn into a franchise, because, obviously. It’s pretty early stages as the next step will be to find a new screenwriter for the project, but Stahelski seems pretty stoked about the film.
“I’ve been a huge fan of the original property since I saw it in high school,” he told THR. “Such great themes of immortality, love, and identity are all wrapped up in such colorful mythology. I can’t think of a better property that gives the opportunity to create interesting characters, mythic themes and action set pieces.”
Having already shown a pretty clever knack for gunplay with the “John Wick” franchise, “Highlander” will get to see him play with swords. Maybe we could just skip a step and have “Highlander” and “John Wick” crossover? There’s a free idea for you Hollywood, take it or leave it.
