While the “Twilight” series made Robert Pattinson a household name and catapulted the actor to superstardom, he wasn’t author Stephenie Meyer‘s first choice as Edward Cullen. Instead, Meyer envisioned another British heartthrob in the role, Henry Cavill. “The most disappointing thing for me is losing my perfect Edward,” Meyer once wrote on her blog. “Henry Cavill is now 24 years old. Let us have a moment of quiet in which to mourn…”

Well, what does Cavill have to say about all this fuss? EW reports that on the latest episode of the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast, Cavill spoke about missing out on the “Twilight” series when asked about “famous near misses” in his career. In short, he’s not too bothered he missed out on the Cullen role, mainly because Cavill didn’t find out he was a top choice until years afterward. “I didn’t know about the movie,” said Cavill. “I didn’t know about them wanting to cast me and the internet wasn’t quite the tool that it is now, and so I only found out afterward. I was like, ‘Oh okay, that would have been cool.'”
So, does that count as a famous near miss? Not really, because Cavill didn’t even audition for Cullen at all. But he does consider losing the Cedric Diggory role in “Harry Potter And The Goblet Of Fire” to Pattinson a definite near miss. “Yeah, I remember that, definitely auditioned for that one…and did not get it,” Cavill chuckled. “The audition may have gone well, it may have gone terribly. I’m sure someone out there has footage which hopefully is locked away and will never be seen. But yeah, I didn’t get it. It wasn’t right.”
Cavill as Cedric Diggory? Yeah, that doesn’t sound right at all. But Cavill as Edward Cullen doesn’t work for this writer either. Maybe Stephanie Meyer didn’t get her ideal Edward Cullen, but Pattinson made his “Twilight” role his own. In any case, Cavill had perfect casting later on in his career; is any other contemporary actor a better fit than Cavill for Clark Kent/Superman?
