Got a Tip?

Helen Mirren To Star In Stolen Art Drama ‘The Golden Lady,’ Johnny Flynn To Play Queen Drummer & More

Helen Mirren The Golden Lady

If the box office results for “The Monuments Men” prove anything, it’s that there’s a mature audience eager for stories about art being recovered from the Nazis. It certainly doesn’t hurt if there’s some recognizable faces in there, and another project is brewing with a veteran star bringing a major piece of art back to its rightful owner.

Baz Bamigboye reports that Helen Mirren is in early talks to star in “The Golden Lady.” In the story penned by Alexi Kaye Campbell, and set to be directed by Simon Curtis (“My Week With Marilyn“), the actress will play “Maria Altmann, a Jewish refugee who, in her 80s, took on a government to recover art treasures she believed rightfully belonged to her family,” among them Gustav Klimt‘s “The Lady In Gold, Portrait Of Adele Bloch-Bauer I,” itself worth over $130 million dollars. An elderly lady fighting for her family’s legacy and art returning to where it belongs? Hello awards season…

Meanwhile, the Brit reporter has also revealed the following: Johnny Flynn, seen recently at Sundance opposite Anne Hathaway in “Song One,” has been cast as Queen drummer Roger Taylor in the brewing Freddie Mercury biopic starring Ben Whishaw, and directed by Dexter Fletcher. Also, Brendan Gleeson has boarded “Suffragette,” a drama about the early feminist movement starring Carey Mulligan, Helena Bonham Carter and Anne-Marie Duff, with Sarah Gavron (“Brick Lane“) directing.

Lastly, Thomas Jane and Jessica Alba will star in the thriller “The Veil,” which kicks off “30 years ago, when members of a religious cult known as Heaven’s Veil take their own lives. The truth behind what really happened remains buried deep in the memory of the sole survivor, a five-year-old girl, who returns to the compound with a documentary crew as an adult. They soon discover something that is far more terrifying than anything they could have imagined.” THR adds that Phil Joanou (“Final Analysis,” “Gridiron Gang“) will helm.

  1. Gee, instead of non-Jew Helen Mirren playing a Jew (again), can we get one of the many young, attractive Jewish actors out there to play Jews (most of them for the first time): Logan Lerman, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Mila Kunis, Andrew Garfield, James Wolk, Ansel Elgort, etc., etc. Helen can sit this one out.
