You’ve probably gasped at our musings about “27 Dresses,” the formulaic-looking rom-com from the makers of “The Devil Wears Prada,” starring the comely Katherine Heigl.
It looks terrible, but it is a slow week (and the movie comes out tomorrow next Friday – January 18). According to Stale Popcorn, the music in the film includes “Valerie” by Mark Ronson and Amy Winehouse (among others).
More amazing and somewhat more implausible is that this clichéd rom-com features a track by the lesser-known 1960’s experimental and psychedelic soul outfit, The Rotary Connection, who we’re big fans of (we used some Rotary Connection in our If I Were Quentin Tarantino imaginary soundtrack playlist; pop-sould singer Minnie Riperton got her start in the Connection)
Off of 1971’s Hey Love, “Love Has Fallen on Me” was remade by Chaka Khan in the late ’70s and recently enjoyed a renaissance when it was sampled for the Common track featuring Lily Allen’s “Driving Me Wild” (which is probably the reason why the Rotary Connection is resurfacing in this mainstream kind of way).
But you won’t find any of these songs on the soundtrack. The disc that is scheduled for a January 11 release is all orchestral score material composed by Randy Edelman. If a more traditional pop soundtrack is being planned, nothing has been announced as of yet (we’d bet it depends on how popular the film does or doesn’t become).
“27 Dresses” stars Heigl and James Marsden and is about a always-a-bridesmade, never a bride cliche times 1000x (or 27 if you want to be specific about it). Heigl faces her worst nightmare when her sister (played by Malin Akerman*) becomes engaged to the man of her dreams (Ed Burns). But at their wedding she meets a man (Marsden) who will… yadda, yadda, yadda. You get the picture.
Incidentally, Akerman fronts a radio-ready hard-rock band in Los Angeles called The Petalstones. They are terrible. Heigl is married to rock-star milquetoast Josh Kelley.

What a waste of otherwise good music on a lifeless movie. There should be tighter controls on what music gets into what commercial or movie, because all of the best stuff is being trivialized with hack films like this. Not everyone has to be Martin Scorsese, but come on – this is just an awful movie to put the Rotary Connection in.
Why would they let their music be used in this movie?
The almighty dollar. And yes, it is a shock, but since when should their be some sort of exclusivity to music in movies?
Even shitty movies deserve the right to pay to license whatever they want.
the movies a good movie! yes its cheesy and a take on all the other movies out there! but than again most movies are so give it a break i thoroughly enjoyed it!!
Watched the movie last night and I agree with the above comment. Yeah its cliched but it was done well and I enjoyed it.
I thought the movie was good, but definitely not going to win any awards. Does anyone know the song they played when she came home from the engagement party that goes “I’m in like with you, not yet in love with you”? I can’t find it.
Saw the movie.. it was awsome, but jus wanted to know what was the name of the song they were singing in the bar seen?
the song that starts “i think i’m in like with you”. it’s called who knows by natasha bedingfield.
Does anyone know the name of the song in the movie 27 dresses that is tracked right after Kevin (marsden) tells Heigl that he wants to take care of her??
I believe the moment your talking about scored to Ray LaMontagne’s song “Be Here Now.” It’s definitely in the movie.
Anon 1.09 that’s be Elton John’s “Benny and the Jets”.

Love has fallen on me by chaka khan.
this was a really funny, good-hearted movie. i get so tired of hateful people bashing “mainstream” entertainment. good for you, you’re SO different.
What is the track of disco music played when she’s dancing in the reception of the 2 weddings she keeps going back and forth to.
what song is played when she tries on the dresses for kevin?!?! im dying to know!!
What song is played after she sees the article and runs out on Kevin? The movie goes back and forth from images of Kevin at his desk and then Jane?
I saw the movie earlier today, and it’s the only movie (so far) that I actually wanted to buy the soundtrack for. I was really dissapointed to find out that they only put the scores on the CD. Hopefully they’ll bring out a cd with the Various artists.
What was the soft last song played?
what is the song thats played when kevin and jane dance at the wedding jane goes to on the boat , where she tells kevin she thinks she loves him
the song where they are at the club, her sister meets the boss for the first time, she screams m**********r!!!! at the 50th anniversary thing, goth club……..what is that?
The song for the boat scene is Just like a star by Corinne Bailey Rae.
I loved the movie. I am sick and tired of people making this so called Profound and deep movies that are just plain and philosophical and goes absolutely nowhere and are boring. Every once in a while i would love that people would appreciate movies that make you feel happy when you leave the movie theater and not depressed and with the certainty that there is nothing you can do to make the world a happy place.
There was one song in the movie I really enjoyed and can’t remember enough of to search for. It’s near the beginning and Jane is sitting in her apartment and I think it’s shortly after the sister starts dating George. It’s a slower song sung by a woman and it’s something about my weary heart can’t hold out much longer or my patience is running out. If I have to watch the movie again I will to find it but some help would be great. Thanks.
Um did you even watch the movie? Because if you HAD you would know that Jane did not meet Kevin at her sister’s wedding…which in fact did not even take place in the movie.
So you’re just criticising this on the basis that it’s a chick flick? Lame review.
Focusing on the music though I thought it was great! WHY OH WHY would you not release a soundtrack? It would be a million times better than the Devil Wears Prada one…
Steven Reese – the disco song you’re referring to is “Don’t Stop Till You Get Enough” by Michael Jackson (the scene when Jane is switching between weddings). 🙂
i agree with what nickyfc said. Why can’t there be more movies that make you laugh and feel good. Who cares about if it is completely original or not. I loved 27 Dresses and i really hope they make a another soundtrack.
what is the song that plays during the dress montage during 27 dresses?
I agree with nickyfc too! I loved 27 Dresses, Katherine Heigl and James Marsden were both good in it. I like an Oscar-nominated movie just as much as the next person, but does that mean that ALL movies have to be Indie and Different? I like those movies too, but once in a while, don’t you wanna go see a movie that you know will make you smile and laugh and feel happy. It was cute, it was cliche, but it was a hell of a lot more entertaining that most of the crap out there today.
Some of us LIKE movies that don’t involve gratuitous (albeit creative) homicides carried out by hirsute foreigners who could only have been barbered by one of Johnny Depp’s incarnations. OK? So stop looking down your noses at us cheerful folk, and start looking up them for boogers. All hail the unpretentious, does-what-it-says-on-the-box romcom.
One of the songs playing at the club was by the Cocteau Twins. It was from their Heaven or Los Vegas CD.
bar scene song would be Gene Loves Jezebel “Cow”.
I think the ones that complained about it being a “Hacker” film need to get a life and quit spending so much time whacking off during a picture. Then maybe they’d know what a good film really is.
Yeah, I admit this movie did follow a pretty conventional romance/comedy formula, but even so I still thought they did a good job with it-it may have been unoriginal, but it wasn’t cheesy, and for my part I actually enjoyed seeing it.
So, it seems like no one seems to know what song was playing during the dress-trying-on-for-kevin montage?
i love this movie- no need to bash it. no, it's not doubt, or slumdog millionaire (which are amazing movies) but this is a romantic comedy, of course it's not going to win an oscar. calm down.
