Got a Tip?

HBO Drop Michael Chabon’s ‘Hobgoblin’ Pilot, Darren Aronofsky Moves On, FX May Pick It Up

 Darren Aronofsky

It’s hard to imagine that anyone would pass up on a show that has magicians and conmen battling Nazis, but HBO has done the unthinkable. After months of development, the cable network has decided to pass on the period piece drama “Hobgoblin.”

What’s even harder to swallow is that The Wrap is reporting that Darren Aronofsky has left the project as well. Had he stayed on, he would’ve directed the pilot episode from a script written by Michael Chabon (“Wonder Boys”) and his wife Ayelet Waldman.  The series would’ve followed a group of conmen and magicians who team up to use their powers of deception to take down Adolf Hitler during World War II.

However, not all hope is lost for this fascinating series. The Wrap is reporting that “an individual with knowledge of the negotiations” has indicated that FX could be picking up the project.  Of course both HBO and FX are remaining quiet on the subject, but if deals are being brokered it won’t be long before the news breaks.

It’s a promising premise, hopefully someone will give it a shot to succeed or fail as a series and not let it simply wither and die on the vine. Bummer we won’t see Aronofsky involved anymore.

  1. I'm confused as to why "a group of magicians and conmen who team up to use their powers of deception to take down Adolf Hitler during World War II" constitutes a "promising premise."
