It’s not controversial to say that Harrison Ford has gotten older, especially when you consider his age when he starred in the first “Indiana Jones” film back in 1981. Well, as Ford preps for the release of “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny,” which arrives later this year, there’s one thing the actor wants you to know right now—cheap age jokes are not going to be featured in the film.
In a very expansive interview over at THR, Harrison Ford covered just about everything the actor has going on in his career right now, from starring in series such as “1923” and “Shrinking” to his upcoming films, like his Marvel debut in “Captain America: New World Order” and the aforementioned ‘Dial of Destiny.’ That’s quite a busy schedule for a man approaching his 81st birthday. But that doesn’t mean Ford is ready to joke about his age on screen, especially in the upcoming ‘Indiana Jones’ film.
“In [‘Dial of Destiny’] there were a lot of old jokes in the script. We took them all out,” explained Ford. “There is a moment where he observes himself in this situation and says, ‘What the fuck am I doing in here?’ But I hate what I call ‘talking about the story.’ I want to see circumstances in which the audience gets a chance to experience the story, not to be led through the nose with highlights pointed out to them. I’d rather create behavior that is the joke of age rather than talk about it.”

Not only is the age of Indiana Jones in the upcoming film not going to be the butt of very many jokes, but it’s also a fairly smart idea, especially considering those age jokes were pretty prominent in the last film in the franchise, ‘The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.’ And honestly, in a world filled with comedies and franchise films that seem to only aim at low-hanging fruit, it’s refreshing to know that ‘Dial of Destiny’ might leave those easy jokes behind.
Now, the important part, age jokes or not, is to make sure ‘Dial of Destiny’ is a good film. After three beloved features, ‘Crystal Skull’ was largely seen as a disappointment when it was released back in 2008. That has left fans curious if the new film, directed by James Mangold, will be more like ‘Crystal Skull’ or if it’ll be a return to form for the character. We’ll have to wait and see when “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” arrives in theaters on June 30.
