Got a Tip?

‘Hap And Leonard’ Gets A Third Season, Fox Cancel Baseball Drama ‘Pitch’ After One

A few months back, we took a look at some of the best TV shows that you might not have seen during the whole Peak TV thing. And one of our faves from that list is “Hap And Leonard,” the hard-boiled Southern crime tale from “Cold In July” director Jim Mickle that airs on Sundance TV, starring James Purefoy and Michael K. Williams as a conscientious objector and a Vietnam vet who get into various scrapes in East Texas in the 1980s.

The second season of the show recently wrapped up, and while, again, Peak TV means that we’ve not got round to it, we hear that it improves on the already considerable pleasures of the first run, and the good news for fans is that, per The Hollywood Reporter, the show’s already been picked up for a third season. Apparently, the series is Sundance’s highest-rated show ever, beating out “Rectify” and “Top Of The Lake,” and the third run will again tell a self-contained story in adapting one of Joe R. Lansdale’s novels, in this case “The Two-Bear Mambo,” that sees the search for Hap’s ex-girlfriend, who’s gone missing in a town infested with the Klan. It’ll air in 2018.

In other peak TV news, we never got around to watching “Pitch,” Fox’s drama about a female baseball pitcher, but had heard mostly good things. Sadly, it’s probably too late: Deadline report that the network have cancelled the show after one season. It’s not a shock — ratings were never great, partly because Fox botched it by airing it behind the low-rated “Rosewood.” But don’t mourn for creator Dan Fogelman: his other show that debuted last fall, “This Is Us,” is the biggest new hit show on broadcast TV, and has already been renewed for two more seasons.
