‘Halston’ Limited Series First Look: Ewan McGregor As The Famous Ultrasuede ’80s Fashion Designer Comes To Netflix In May

Today, on what would have been legendary fashion designer Roy Halston Frowick’s 89th birthday, Netflix honors the visionary icon by announcing the May 14 global premiere date for the limited series “Halston,” starring Ewan McGregor and revealing its first look at the series.

In case you’re unaware, Halston was the creator of the ultra-chic ’80s Ultrasuede look and a late ’70s and ’80s fashion icon. He was a mainstay of Studio 54, that disco, dancing, and drugs scene, and partied with all the celebrities of the day, including scenesters like Andy Warhol. His rise and fall tale is rather predictable, at least where 1980s excess is concerned, but it’s a fascinating story nonetheless.

“Halston” has a pretty great cast too: Ewan McGregor as “Halston,” Krysta Rodriguez as Liza Minnelli, a dear and personal friend of the designer, Rebecca Dayan, Bill Pullman, Gian Franco Rodriguez, David Pittu, Sullivan Jones, Rory Culkin as filmmaker Joel Schumacher, Kelly Bishop and Vera Farmiga as a character simply known as Adele (but not the same pop sensation, let’s face it)

Here’s the official synopsis:

The limited series Halston follows the legendary fashion designer (Ewan McGregor) as he leverages his single, invented name into a worldwide fashion empire that’s synonymous with luxury, sex, status, and fame, literally defining the era he lives in, the 1970s and ‘80s New York — until a hostile takeover forces him to battle for control of his most precious asset… the name Halston itself. The series is Executive Produced by Ryan Murphy, Ian Brennan, Alexis Martin Woodall, Daniel Minahan, Ewan McGregor, Eric Kovtun, Sharr White, and Christine Vachon, and Pamela Koffler of Killer Films. Minahan also serves as the series director.

Yes, it’s a Ryan Murphy show, and perhaps that’s bad (not a fan!), but here’s to hoping Daniel Minahan as the series director, known for “Six Feet Under,” “Deadwood,” “True Blood,” and “Game of Thrones” can give it real voice and complexity. “Halston” comes to Netflix on Friday, May 14.
