Of all the characters that appeared in “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-verse,” the two that have definitely gone on to become massive fan-favorites are Miles Morales and Gwen Stacy. And though there is a ‘Spider-Verse’ sequel in the works that presumably features Morales as the lead character, there hasn’t been word on when we might see Gwen Stacy’s character again. And not even the actress who voices her, Hailee Steinfeld, has any idea.

Speaking to Entertainment Tonight, Steinfeld was asked about a potential spin-off for ‘Spider-Verse’ that would focus on her character. This comes after reports that Sony was interested in pursuing a film in the ‘Spider-Verse’ franchise with a female lead.
“I am not in the know with these things,” she explained. “I feel like this is the time to figure it all out…there hasn’t been much that I’ve heard.”
After the breakout success of Sony’s ‘Spider-verse,’ as the film became a hit at the box office and with critics, on its way to earning the Best Animated Feature Oscar, the studio was quick to announce plans for a sequel and a potential female-led spin-off. But ever since then, we’ve seen progress and discussion about the sequel to the film, but the proposed spin-off seems to have been forgotten.

Of course, with Steinfeld’s Gwen Stacy character and the possibilities of various other female characters from the Spider-Man lore showing up via interdimensional travel, there are nearly limitless possibilities for how Sony could make the spin-off work. Yes, animation is time-consuming and expensive, and figuring out a sequel and a spin-off at the same time might a bit too much. But we’ll just have to wait and see if the studio was serious about a female-led animated ‘Spider-verse’ adventure or if that was just all talk.
