Well, we’ve spent the whole month looking at what critics – and we- really liked across the past year in the film. But what about those who make movies themselves? It’s time for the directors to have their say, and 42 moviemakers have shared with Indiewire they’ve faves of 2017.
There are few directors (except perhaps Martin Scorsese) who love talking about movies – and do so with as much depth and insight – as Guillermo del Toro. His top ten list features plenty of titles that have been dominating the best-of conversation. But we’re glad to see some love for S. Craig Zahler‘s overlooked and deliciously brutal “Brawl In Cell Block 99“. While we’re intrigued to discover “Tigers Are Not Afraid” for ourselves (in case you’re wondering, it’s a Mexican fantasy film by Issa López that picked up a load of awards at Screamfest but doesn’t seem to have U.S. distribution at the moment).
Check out del Toro’s list and update your New Year’s weekend plans accordingly.
