Got a Tip?

Guillermo Del Toro To Produce A CG-Animated Movie Called ‘Day Of The Dead,’ Obviously

Guillermo Del Toro

Over the course of his career Guillermo Del Toro has said yes to a lot of things. In fact, the writer/producer/director has so much on the go, we recently broke down the odds on which projects were actually going to get made. And those were just his directorial gigs. On the producing front, he's got as many projects brewing (if not more) and today he added one more.

Reel FX announced that Del Toro would lend his talents as a producer on "Day Of The Dead," a new CG-animated film set to be helmed by Emmy Award winner Jorge R. Gutierrez ("El Tigre," "The Adventures of Manny Rivera") and penned by Gutierrez and fellow Emmy winner Doug Landale ("The Weekenders," "Happily N'Ever After") the film is described as a “Romeo and Juliet” style love story set against a Mexican Day of the Dead backdrop (no, not the zombie movie, but the annual celebration).

No word yet on the cast, but this one has high ambitions with the filmmakers touting that an A-list roster of musical talent is being brought on to provide music for the reportedly groundbreaking movie (though how it will break said ground is not clear). But it does sound refreshingly original, and with Del Toro behind the scenes it will hopefully make a distinctive impression on the animation landscape and offer up a nice alternative to the usual Pixar/DreamWorks/Fox fare. The wheels are in motion, and "Day Of The Dead" is being aimed for a fall 2014 release.

  1. So in a world that has had Gnomeo and Juliet, the Underworld films, and a ton of other similar films, a "Romeo and Juliet” style love story sounds refreshingly original?
