The more time we spend with Guillermo Del Toro’s films, the more we love him. His recent work has been more divisive — “Crimson Peak” got mixed responses and poor box office, “Pacific Rim” did well enough to justify a sequel but still splits people — but we love both, and basically everything that came before, and can’t wait for his next film, which starts shooting soon.

But our absolute favorite of his films might be “Pan’s Labyrinth,” his 2006 fantasy about a young girl and her encounters with the fairy world during the Spanish Civil War. Easily the most acclaimed of his work, it was a big hit (still the fifth-biggest foreign-language film ever in the U.S) and won three of the six Oscars it was nominated for).
With “Cronos” and “Devil’s Backbone,” the earlier two movies in an unofficial Spanish-language trilogy, already in Criterion, it’s been rumored for years that ‘Pan’s’ would eventually get the special treatment, and today Del Toro has confirmed that the movie will be coming to the Collection, as well as unveiling some beautiful cover art that gels with the already-created ones for the earlier movies. There’s no exact date yet, but GDT says it’ll be on the proverbial shelves in the fall — keep your eyes peeled for an exact date. Meanwhile, Del Toro’s new film, starring Sally Hawkins, Octavia Spencer and Richard Jenkins, goes before cameras soon.
