We think it’s admirable and funny that the self-aware male actors of the upcoming Warner Bros. romantic comedy, “He’s Just Not That Into You,” have made this clever marketing viral clip about 10 Chick Flick cliches you won’t find in their flick.
It’s a smart way to market this and we love how Justin Long urges you guy to hang on and not bail on the clip once the guys (Long, Kevin Connelly and Bradley Cooper) introduce what movie they’re talking about. “No, nononow, hold the phone,” he pleads. “I know what you guys are thinking. You’re thinking, ‘oh great, fantastic, another chick flick.’ “
The boys urge you to see what they call, “not your typical chick flick, claim “you might even enjoy it” and run down a list of 10 cliches you won’t find in their movie (soundtracked perfectly to cheese-rock cliche anthems like Third Eye Blind’s “Semi-Charmed Life”), including no make-over montages, no singing into random objects and eight other tried, true and trusted formulaic elements that anyone who has seen five minutes of a rom-com is very familiar with.
It’s largely amusing, self-flagellating, again, self-aware and funny. It’s not like we don’t like films starring female characters, Mike Leigh, for example, has been doing intelligent films largely starring women for years, but his films always have the acute presence of mind not to pander and condescend to its audience like most romantic comedies/ “chick flicks” seem to mandate in compulsory fashion.
We endorse this clip. But we ask one question, for all those willing to take the leap and be dragged go with their girlfriend or spouse. Does this offer come with a money back guarantee? 😉
That delicious piece of ear-rape from Third Eye Blind is called “Semi Charmed Life.”
Let me die now.
oh right. i probably got that wrong cause i don’t give a fuck about them. i’ll fix.
