Got a Tip?

Greta Gerwig Arrived At The Golden Globes & Was Greeted Awkwardly By HFPA Members Swearing They Voted For Her

One of the more unexpected viral moments of this year’s Golden Globes actually happened well before the ceremony and telecast even began. Thanks to a picture shared on Twitter, “Little Women” filmmaker Greta Gerwig was shown in an empty theater all dressed up and by herself. The picture was shared as a silly way of pointing out that Gerwig was the first A-lister to find her seat at the ceremony.

But according to a new interview with Jimmy Kimmel, it appears that the story behind the picture is even more tragic and awkward.

“I was two hours early to this, and I was in an empty banquet hall,” explained Gerwig. “I was actually not nominated. My brilliant actress Saoirse Ronan was nominated for her performance. My composer Alexandre Desplat was nominated for his work.”

She continued, “But I was not nominated, and I was there to support Noah [Baumbach]. And he was doing all this press, but I was just there early. So I was in this banquet hall with no one there, and then I saw all the members of the Hollywood Foreign Press inside. And they were all like ‘We voted for you,’ and I was like, ‘Well, you didn’t. Because I didn’t even get nominated. So maybe one of you did, but it’s not possible that all of you did.’”

After the nominations for this year’s Golden Globes were announced, it didn’t take long for social media to recognize that the Best Director noms were all men, leading to a bit of backlash towards the HFPA for not including at least one female filmmaker in the group. This obviously led to the apologies that Gerwig received during those awkward conversations.

Sadly, neither Desplat nor Ronan received the trophies that night, so “Little Women” went without a win. However, at least Gerwig got some consolations from the folks that didn’t nominate her. So that counts for something…right?

“Little Women” is in theaters now.
