Got a Tip?

‘Green Lantern’: Christopher Nolan Endorses John David Washington To Star As The Superhero But He’s Not Directing It

In the run-up to the release of “Tenet,” I decided to go back and revisit some of Christopher Nolans’ earlier works. While “Memento” still stands out as my favorite of the bunch, I have to admit, “The Dark Knight” is pretty damn good. I know, I know, that’s one hell of a hot take. But, folks, Nolan is actually a fine filmmaker that was able to bring realism, grit, and mild bits of humor to that film, making it the serious DC film that Zack Snyder wishes he could make. Alas, according to a new interview with Geeks of Color, it appears Nolan has put his superhero days behind him, even when presented with a new hero and a leading man that he’s definitely familiar with.

Both Nolan and John David Washington, while promoting the release of “Tenet,” were interviewed by Geeks of Color when the question was asked about the fan-casting dream of having Washington take on the role of John Stewart in a new version of “Green Lantern.” When asked if he’d be down to play Green Lantern in a new film, Washington pointed to Nolan and said, “Ask him!”

The question was then repurposed, asking Nolan if the director is interested in directing a “Green Lantern” film with Washington as the lead.

“I think my DC days are over,” said Nolan. “I think [Washington] would be an excellent choice. He certainly gets my vote.”

For those not familiar with the “Green Lantern” lore, the title refers to whoever is in possession of the Power Ring, which imbues its bearer with the powers of the Green Lantern. In the comics, that includes Hal Jordan (who Ryan Reynolds portrayed in the godawful 2011 film) and many other humans, such as John Stewart, a former military man that becomes Green Lantern. It’s been rumored that Stewart will play a crucial role in Warner Bros. upcoming ‘Lantern’ plans, so it’s not out of the realm of possibility that John David Washington could be looked at as a possible lead.

Obviously, no one would expect Nolan to tackle “Green Lantern.” However, given that the character is a completely different beast than Batman and would lend himself to an even bigger, epic adventure (he’s not stuck in one city like Bruce Wayne), it would be interesting to see what the filmmaker would cook up. But it doesn’t appear that’s going to happen. However, if you are reading this and work at Warner Bros., definitely consider Washington for the role. He’d be pretty great.
