If you’re feeling a bit dizzy from the swirl of DC Films news this week, we completely understand. Someone at Warner Bros. has certainly opened the faucet for news, and last night word broke that writing/directing team Glenn Ficarra and John Requa (“Crazy Stupid Love,” “Focus,” “Whiskey Tango Foxtrot”) had been tapped to helm a movie featuring Joker and Harley Quinn, with Jared Leto and Margot Robbie reprising their roles from “Suicide Squad.” What this meant for the once proposed Harley Quinn spin-off movie or the mooted “Gotham City Sirens” wasn’t clear… at least until now.

In their story about the Joker/Harley Quinn flick, The Tracking Board reveals that the movie is actually going to replace “Gotham City Sirens” on the DC Films slate. According to the site, the project, which once had “Suicide Squad” helmer David Ayer attached to direct, and Geneva Robertson-Dworet (the upcoming “Tomb Raider” reboot, and the developing “Sherlock Holmes 3″) writing the script, is being “reconceived” and was originally planned to follow “Suicide Squad 2.” I wouldn’t so go far as to say it’s dead, because the general idea, was to bring together the female villains of the DC universe, possibly including Poison Ivy and Catwoman, and those IPs are too valuable to toss aside. It mostly sounds like Ayer and DC Films are parting, which is probably just a good thing for everybody after “Suicide Squad.”
Ultimately, fans just want more of Robbie as Harley Quinn, and they’re going to get it with the fast-tracked “Suicide Squad 2,” and the spinoff with the Joker. Given DC Films’ crammed development slate, the rest of the characters can wait.
I thought the Joker/Quinn flashbacks were the most unsettling and inappropriate parts of SS.
