Got a Tip?

Golden Globes 2019 Predictions: ‘A Star Is Born,’ ‘The Favourite,’ ‘Barry’

Best Television Series – Drama
“The Americans”
“Bodyguard”
“Homecoming”
“Killing Eve”
“Pose”

Who will win: “Killing Eve”
Who should win: “The Americans”
Upset: “Pose”
Lowdown: Besides the fact it stars co-host Oh, “Killing Eve” is also just prestige enough, just new enough and just international enough to get their attention. “Pose” also has a unique opportunity to gain some broad audience attention with a win here, an aspect the HFPA often can’t help themselves in bestowing.

Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series – Drama
Caitriona Balfe (“Outlander”)
Elisabeth Moss (“The Handmaid’s Tale”)
Sandra Oh (“Killing Eve”)
Julia Roberts (“Homecoming”)
Keri Russell (“The Americans”)

Who will win: Sandra Oh
Who should win: Julia Roberts
Upset: Julia Roberts or Elisabeth Moss
Lowdown: This is actually a tight race, but it makes sense the HFPA would reward Oh. Of course, Roberts and even Moss should never be discounted.

Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series – Drama
Jason Bateman (“Ozark”)
Stephan James (“Homecoming”)
Richard Madden (“Bodyguard”)
Billy Porter (“Pose”)
Matthew Rhys (“The Americans”)

Who will win: Richard Madden
Who should win: Matthew Rhys
Upset: Billy Porter
Lowdown: “Bodyguard” likely won’t take Drama Series, but the HFPA can give the spotlight to hot not-so-new thing Madden here. Of course, Rhys and Porter are more deserving. Whether the voters take that into account or is another matter entirely.

Best Television Series – Musical or Comedy
“Barry” (HBO)
“The Good Place” (NBC)
“Kidding” (Showtime)
“The Kominsky Method” (Netflix)
“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” (Amazon)

Who will win: “Barry”
Who should win: “Barry”
Upset: “The Good Place” or “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”
Lowdown: No series has repeated in this category since “Glee” in 2011. “Maisel” seems more up the HFPA’s alley, but that track record says “Barry” will get the win. The increasing critical and industry buzz for “The Good Place” means that NBC series has a good shot as well.

Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series – Musical or Comedy
Kristen Bell (“The Good Place”)
Candice Bergen (“Murphy Brown”)
Alison Brie (“Glow”)
Rachel Brosnahan (“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”)
Debra Messing (“Will & Grace”)

Who will win: Rachel Brosnahan
Who should win: Rachel Brosnahan
Upset: Kristen Bell
Lowdown: Bell could surprise, but Brosnahan should follow up her Emmy win here.

Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series – Musical or Comedy
Sacha Baron Cohen (“Who Is America?”)
Jim Carrey (“Kidding”)
Michael Douglas (“The Kominsky Method”)
Donald Glover (“Atlanta”)
Bill Hader (“Barry”)

Who will win: Bill Hader
Who should win: Donald Glover
Upset: Donald Glover or Sacha Baron Cohen
Lowdown: We think Hader is taking this one, but Glover or Baron Cohen aren’t that far behind him. The HFPA could also surprise by awarding Carrey who is an eight-time nominee and two-time winner they adore.

Best Television Limited Series or Motion Picture Made for Television
“The Alienist” (TNT)
“The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story” (FX)
“Escape at Dannemora” (Showtime)
“Sharp Objects” (HBO)
“A Very English Scandal” (Amazon)

Who will win: “The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story”
Who should win: “Escape at Dannemora”
Upset: “Sharp Objects”
Lowdown: Ryan Murphy’s popular mini-series should repeat its Emmy win here. If there is any possible upset it would come from “Sharp Objects” and that has to worry Murphy who saw his epic”Feud” fall to another HBO limited series, “Big Little Lies,” in this category last year.

Best Performance by an Actress in a Limited Series or Motion Picture Made for Television
Amy Adams (“Sharp Objects”)
Patricia Arquette (“Escape at Dannemora”)
Connie Britton (“Dirty John”)
Laura Dern (“The Tale”)
Regina King (“Seven Seconds”)

Who will win: Amy Adams
Who should win: Laura Dern
Upset: Laura Dern or Regina King
Lowdown: Oh look, another category with Adams and King competing against one another. Adams should easily win this one, but Dern has a shot too.

Best Performance by an Actor in a Limited Series or Motion Picture Made for Television
Antonio Banderas (“Genius: Picasso”)
Daniel Bruhl (“The Alienist”)
Darren Criss (“The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story”)
Benedict Cumberbatch (“Patrick Melrose”)
Hugh Grant (“A Very English Scandal”)

Who will win: Darren Criss
Who should win: Hugh Grant
Upset: Hugh Grant or Benedict Cumberbatch
Lowdown: It’s got to be Emmy winner Darren Criss with the repeat win, right? Not so fast. Criss is the clear-cut frontrunner, but this is Grant’s fifth nomination and he won previously in 1995 for “Four Weddings And A Funeral.” Cumberbatch is also a three-time nominee who hasn’t reached the podium yet and don’t think they HFPA don’t want him up there eventually.

Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in a Series, Limited Series or Motion Picture Made for Television
Alex Borstein (“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”)
Patricia Clarkson (“Sharp Objects”)
Penelope Cruz (“The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story”)
Thandie Newton (“Westworld”)
Yvonne Strahovski (“The Handmaid’s Tale”)

Who will win: Alex Borstein
Who should win: Yvonne Strahovski
Upset: Any of them
Lowdown: Honestly, this is a pick ’em. We’re going with recent Emmy winner Borstein, but none of the five would be that surprising.

Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in a Series, Limited Series or Motion Picture Made for Television
Alan Arkin (“The Kominsky Method”)
Kieran Culkin (“Succession”)
Edgar Ramirez (“The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story”)
Ben Whishaw (“A Very English Scandal”)
Henry Winkler (“Barry”)

Who will win: Henry Winkler
Who should win: Henry Winkler
Upset: Edgar Ramirez, Ben Whishaw
Lowdown: Winkler looks like the favorite, but Whishaw and Ramirez seem like HFPA-esque picks. Choose wisely.

The 76th Golden Globes are live on NBC beginning at 5 PM PT, 8 PM ET.
