Got a Tip?

Legendary Announces Untitled ‘Godzilla vs. Kong’ Sequel To Shoot In Australia Later This Year

It’s undeniable that there is a strong fanbase for Legendary’s Monsterverse franchise, as “Godzilla vs. Kong” was able to earn $468.2 million at the global box office, even with a hybrid theatrical/HBO Max release last year. But after that film, fans asked, what’s next? Well, we finally have an idea when to expect the next kaiju/titan battle fest as the studio has announced a sequel is about to get underway.

Screen Queensland and Legendary Pictures have officially announced that an untitled sequel to “Godzilla vs. Kong” will shoot in Queensland, Australia by the end of 2022. Although a start date wasn’t mentioned, the report says filming is eyeing a start later this year. The one tiny wrinkle of it all: we’re not really sure what it is or what the details are other than a sequel to that film.

“We are delighted to welcome producers Legendary Pictures back to Queensland, following the filming of ‘Kong Skull Island‘ and ‘Godzilla vs. Kong’ in the state in 2016 and 2019 respectively,” Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said of the next Monsterverse production returning to the Gold Coast.

The sequel is said to deliver the Australian state an epic economic boost of $79.2M million AUS ($58.6 million USD) to the region and creates 505 jobs for local cast and crew, along with opportunities for 750 extras. A lucrative partnership between Queensland and Legendary.

Legendary is also behind a live-action Monsterverse streaming series at Apple TV+ that is said to focus on Monarch.

Despite the announcement, they don’t name a director in the press release which is a little odd. There had been reports that “Godzilla Vs. Kong” director Adam Wingard would return for another Monsterverse film, but that has yet to be made official by either Legendary or Wingard.

The last installment introduced Mechagodzilla, a giant robotic version of Godzilla, and has moved Kong from Skull Island to the Hollow Earth location that could allow for more fantastical titans along with possibly other large apes similar to Kong. Maybe, we’ll get to see Kiko, the son of King Kong, as rumored, but all of that is speculation at best at the moment.
