Maybe it’s just some ingrained love of big monsters destroying cities, but for some reason, I’m a complete sucker for anything related to Godzilla. So, when the reboot arrived in theaters back in 2014, I fell for it, hook, line, and sinker. And even though the sequel “Godzilla: King of the Monsters” hasn’t really explored much in the way of plot in its first few trailers, there’s something majestic and horrifying watching these massive monsters fighting on land. So, even though the latest trailer is more of an extended TV spot (just about a minute long), there’s enough awesomeness included that we just have to share it.

Filmmaker Michael Dougherty is pulling out all the stops for ‘King of the Monsters.’ Unlike the first film, which rightly focused most of its monster efforts on the titular Godzilla, this sequel seems to have the world overrun by various monsters. What’s Earth to do when Mothra, Rodan, and King Ghidorah are running wild? Clearly, you unleash Godzilla.
At this point, the human characters in these films are completely secondary. But starting with the 2014 reboot, carried over into “Kong: Skull Island,” and now ‘King of the Monsters,’ Legendary has done a great job with hiring some great actors to inhabit roles that try to lend a bit of emotion and stakes to the whole destruction of the world thing.
Vera Farmiga, Kyle Chandler, Millie Bobby Brown, Bradley Whitford, Sally Hawkins, Charles Dance, Thomas Middleditch, O’Shea Jackson Jr., and of course, Ken Watanabe round out an impressive cast for a film where 99% of the audience just wants to see an overgrown lizard.
“Godzilla: King of the Monsters” arrives in theaters on May 31. You can watch the new TV spot below:
