An hour ago I hadn’t heard of this show and now the remaining weeks between today’s trailer drop and the show’s November premiere seems like an eternity. Steven Soderbergh EPing a new Netflix limited series written-and-directed in its entirety by Scott Frank? This is a no-brainer.
Soderbergh’s television track record is pretty great; he’s involved to varying degrees with projects ranging from “The Knick” to Amazon‘s “Red Oaks” to “The Girlfriend Experience.” Apparently, Frank had wanted Soderbergh to direct “Godless” as a feature film (the two had previously collaborated as screenwriter and director on “Out of Sight“) but Soderbergh refused due to his fear of horses (“I can’t do Westerns, I’m terrified of horses, which is unfortunate.”) Frank had to settle for Soderbergh taking on the role of Executive Producer.
No matter; Scott Frank is an extremely competent director and this is a passion project of his. The fact that it comes with Steven Soderbergh’s seal of approval is only a cherry on top of an already extremely appealing desert item. “Godless” stars Jeff Daniels, Michelle Dockery, and Jack O’Connell. Here’s the official synopsis:
Notorious criminal Frank Griffin (Jeff Daniels) and his gang of outlaws are on a mission of revenge against Roy Goode (Jack O’Connell), a son-like protégé who betrayed the brotherhood. While on the run, Roy seeks refuge with hardened widower Alice Fletcher (Michelle Dockery), an outcast herself, in a worn-down, isolated mining town of La Belle, NM — governed mainly by women. When word reaches La Belle that Griffin is headed their way, the town bands together to defend against the murderous gang in a lawless western frontier.
“Godless” will be Netflix’s first official original limited series. Also starring Scoot McNairy, Sam Waterston, and Kim Coates, it premieres on Netflix on November 22nd.
