Gina Carano Beats Up Ewan McGregor In Set Pics From Steven Soderbergh’s ‘Haywire’

Cliff Martinez Scoring ‘Contagion’

While we’ve lately been going off about the lack of quality female-led comedies with last year’s “Easy A” and “Bridesmaids,” “Bad Teacher” and “Friends With Benefits” on the way, it seems at least that gap will be filled for now. But another genre that has been largely void of strong female roles has been action films, but Steven Soderbergh is about to make a distinct impression in that field with his upcoming “Haywire.”

Featuring an all-star cast including Michael Fassbender, Channing Tatum, Ewan McGregor, Michael Douglas, Bill Paxton, Michael Angarano, Matthieu Kassovitz and Antonio Banderas, the picture is a gritty spy thriller written by Lem Dobbs (”The Limey”) and stars MMA fighter Gina Carano as a black ops soldier on a mission of revenge after she’s double crossed by one of her team-mates (we read the script and it’s taut, lean and mean; typically no-nonsense work by Dobbs). And now we have our first look at Carano in action (via MMA Madman), beating the shit out of McGregor on a beach.

What can say about these pics except that Carano is looking badass and that we can’t wait for this thing to arrive. Speaking of which, it’s probably pretty obvious by now with nothing in the way of trailers or marketing material, that the previously revealed April release date isn’t coming. We’ve been hearing a few things about the picture and apparently August is the next new target date though nothing is confirmed just yet.

Meanwhile, Soderbergh’s other massive ensemble film, the virus thriller “Contagion” is marching toward its fall release date. Starring Kate Winslet, Matt Damon, Gwyneth Paltrow, Marion Cotillard, Jude Law and many more, Soderbergh recently said about the film, “It’s a horror movie actually. We kill kids. It’s brutal. It’s scary.” Awesome.

Film Music Reporter has revealed that longtime Soderbergh collaborator Cliff Martinez (“Sex, Lies and Videotape,” “Kafka,” “Underneath,” “The Limey,” “Traffic,” “Solaris“) has been tapped for the score. “Contagion” will infect theaters on October 21st.

  1. Gina looks great and is a magnificent athlete. To see an attractive woman beating up guys in a convincing way (especially in a mainstream movie) is long, long overdue.

I do hope this is only the beginning of Gina\’s film career. In fact I think she would make a very good female James Bond. \’My name is Bond…Jasmine Bond\’!

  2. Haywire will be great. The reviews it got from a private screening were off the charts all positive. The locations, action scenes, music, cast are all top notch. Also cool to have an ass kicking girl in the lead role who actuall CAN kick guys asses in real life. Look at how powerful Gina looks stranding over the beaten down McGregor in the last pic – I can\’t wait for this!

  3. I don\’t get why people talk about Soderbergh like he\’s some great director…he has made a ton of movies, yes, including some real good ones but I\’d say at least 2/3rds of his films are either just OK and downright terrible.

I mean people write about \”Out of Sight\” like it\’s a beloved classic, it\’s OK, but I don\’t get the constant interest in this guy. Overrated.

  4. They\’re 2 totally different films. One is an action-thriller, Bourne esque, which sounds like it has a blaxploitation-ish soundtrack which might give it an awesome tone (though one that some ppl may find out)

And one is more like a realistic horror thriller (and scary as shit in the way that it reads like it could happen). Read the scripts yo, not that hard to find.

  5. You mean an all shit cast right? Ewan McGregor, Chatum Tanning, Bill Paxton, Antonio Banderas…some of the worst actors out there. And all being led by a non-actor! Didn\’t anyone learn you don\’t hire non actors from Death Proof. Who cares if they are the \”real deal.\” That\’s why they call it ACTING!
