Go ahead and insert your own joke about Gerard Butler pointing a gun to the sky and screaming “Noooooooooooo!” But yes, the actor has dropped out of the “Point Break” remake that takes Kathryn Bigelow‘s 1991 classic and sets it in the world of extreme sports for some reason. So what’s the deal?
Well, apparently “creative differences” and scheduling—Butler is shooting “London Has Fallen” this autumn—all collided to force Butler out of the movie. Does that mean this bad idea is canceled? Hardly. Alcon Entertainment are hoping to stay on schedule, with cameras to roll next month, and to get a new leading man in place shortly to join co-star Luke Bracey (who, him?) and director Ericson Core. So don’t worry, that extreme-sports-heist-remake movie is still a thing that might happen. But good luck recapturing the magic of Keanu and Swayze.
Meanwhile, Channing Tatum continues to pad out an already impressive CV. Sony has inked the dude to produce and star in an untitled thriller penned by Kristin Gore (famously the pen behind David O. Russell‘s incomplete “Nailed”). And it sounds like promising stuff with the ’70s-set story telling “the inspiring true story of an ordinary family man who decides to risk everything by going undercover to take down the biggest mob boss in the country.” We like the sound of that. But until we know more, here’s Tatum fighting crime another way, with a new TV spot for “22 Jump Street.” [The Hollywood Reporter]
Just a heads up; Point Break is directed by Ericson Core. Wimmer just wrote the script.
