If you’re an avid fan of George R.R. Martin, then you probably read his incredibly detailed blog posts on his “Not a Blog” blog. Considering we’re still waiting on the forthcoming (ha!) novel in the writer’s “Game of Thrones” series, the blog is about the closest you can come to consistently read the writing of Martin. But we have to admit, reading about the Giants’ and Jets’ football seasons pales in comparison to the further adventures of Jon Snow and Daenerys Targaryen. But I digress.
That being said, there was a juicy morsel of knowledge buried deep into his last blog post, somewhere after Martin breaks down the season that Giants quarterback Eli Manning is having (not even kidding). Martin, who previously said that the upcoming “Game of Thrones” prequel series on HBO (starring Naomi Watts) would be called “The Long Night,” has backtracked on his statement…sort of.
The writer says, “HBO has informed me that the Jane Goldman pilot is not (yet) titled THE LONG NIGHT. That’s is certainly the title I prefer, but for the moment the pilot is still officially UNTITLED. So… mea culpa, mea culpa, mea culpa.”
He continued, “Elsewise, the pilot is coming along well, with casting falling into place. I could tell you more, but I am not supposed to. We also have a couple of other successor shows still in development, but I cannot tell you about those either. Sorry.”
However, when he says things like “not (yet)” and “for the moment,” it’s clear that Martin likely spilled the beans on the title announcement a bit early for HBO’s liking. So, for all intents and purposes, the series will probably be called “The Long Night,” or more accurately, “Game of Thrones: The Long Night” or some such. But don’t worry, George, we’ll keep that between us.
The news about the development on a couple more prequels is heartening. Fans got their hopes up that HBO was only going to move forward with one series, but from what the writer is hinting at, it looks like the network still is interested in further exploring what’s out there. Perhaps, HBO would like to have “Game of Thrones” content throughout the year, instead of just a few months each year.
In the meantime, this is all speculation, as we are still anxiously awaiting the upcoming final season of the flagship series. No date has been announced, but EW recently released a slew of new behind-the-scenes pictures from throughout the series, if you’re interested. Our favorite includes Varys using a roller to de-hair/de-fuzz Cersei between takes.
