Got a Tip?

Yeah, They Have Issues, But We Want More Movies Like ‘Gemini’ & ‘Unsane’ [Adjust Your Tracking Podcast]

There was a time not long ago when movies like this weren’t just low budget “indie” efforts…

On this episode of Adjust Your Tracking, Joe and I reflect on a bygone era of cinema when different kinds of movies could more easily land on the radar of the masses. For this discussion, we use new releases “Unsane” and “Gemini” as our launching point and are two main reviews at the top of the show. We wrap things up in the third act by revisiting “Bad Influence,” from 1990, in a fitting edition of our segment HOLD UP where we realize director Curtis Hanson is deeply underrated in the annals of American filmmakers.

Already released last week, veteran director Steven Soderbergh‘s “Unsane” is a small horror film shot on the iPhone. Despite it only making small waves at the box office, it should be fine considering its low, low budget (read The Playlist’s review here). With “Gemini,” director Aaron Katz (“Cold Weather“) has taken a smart step up in style, budget and cast, while his key collaborators like composer Keegan DeWitt and DP Andrew Reed, remain. It makes for a damn good new film (read The Playlist’s glowing review here) from the young filmmaker once lumped (unfairly?) into the Mumblecore crew.

On our next episode we’ll dive into two modern auteurs, also in vastly different stages in their careers, but both hugely influential as well. You can look forward to us discussing Wes Anderson‘s wonderful but already controversial new film, “Isle Of Dogs,” and Steven Spielberg‘s second effort in a few months, “Ready Player One.” Tune in to the feed early next week for that one.
