**Spoilers for last night’s “Game of Thrones” episode**
Last week, despite a battle that lasted over an hour, leading to the deaths of several beloved characters (RIP Lyanna Mormont), the discussion surrounding “Game of Thrones” was about lighting and how dark the show literally was. Then this week, despite even more prominent deaths (RIP Rhaegal and Missandei), the discussion seemingly is going to be centered on a Starbucks cup.
As has been pointed out on Twitter, last night’s “Game of Thrones”, titled “The Last of the Starks,” featured a Starbucks cup in one of the early scenes, leading to many jokes about the series’ attention to detail and long production cycle.
For those wanting to see for yourself, you can look at the screencap below or watch the episode again. It’s not even a “blink and you miss it” moment, at all. Clear as day, around 17:30 into the episode, you can see that Dany, the Mother of Dragons, has a cup of coffee in front of her. Apparently, the Breaker of Chains prefers Starbucks to the swill that the North has, huh?
Look, these sorts of snafus happen occasionally, especially with period films and TV series. But the shocking thing about this oversight is the immense amount of buzz surrounding the final six episodes of ‘Thrones.’ HBO and the series’ creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have to know that every scene is going to be analyzed. Every line of dialogue is going to be broken down for clues. So, just to have such an egregious mistake is at once a bit disheartening and also incredibly humorous.
Each episode cost tens of millions of dollars, and months upon months of shooting, but somehow an actor’s Starbucks cup found its way into a major scene. And now that it’s been pointed out, there’s no way that fans will be able to watch that part of the episode without honing in on it.
Now, since this is 2019 and social media is relentless, you have folks that have been trying to investigate who’s Starbucks it actually is. Judging by the fact that Dany is sitting next to it, many believed that actress Emilia Clarke is to blame. But amateur sleuths have pointed to an older photo of Bella Ramsey and Sophie Turner posing during production, with a cup that looks eerily similar to the one in the scene behind held by the latter actress. Case closed? The world awaits your answer, Ms. Turner.
“Game of Thrones” airs on Sunday nights on HBO.
