Fresh off her recent Oscar win, Emma Stone is starring in another possible Oscar contender, “Battle Of The Sexes” alongside Steve Carell, with the trailer just dropping today. The Jonathan Dayton– and Valerie Faris-directed film follows the famous tennis match between Billie Jean King and Bobby Riggs. The official synopsis is below:
The 1973 tennis match between Billie Jean King (Emma Stone) and Bobby Riggs (Steve Carell) became the most watched televised sports event of all time. Trapped in the media glare, King and Riggs were on opposites sides of a binary argument, but off-court each was fighting more personal and complex battles. With her husband urging her to fight for equal pay, the private King was also struggling to come to terms with her own sexuality, while Riggs gambled his legacy and reputation in a bid to relive the glories of his past.
Married co-directors Dayton and Faris haven’t made a movie since 2012’s underrated “Ruby Sparks” and are most famous for their Sundance and Academy Award darling, 2009’s “Little Miss Sunshine,” but they look to coming back in a big way. Co-director Jonathan Dayton told People, “This was a really important and serious time in the women’s liberation movement, and it was one of the first times that a political issue was acted out in the circus-like atmosphere…It just felt incredibly relevant to today’s time.”
In addition to Stone and Carell, the film co-stars Sarah Silverman, Andrea Riseborough, Elisabeth Shue, Alan Cumming, and Eric Christian Olsen. The film will be released by Fox Searchlight Pictures on September 22nd. Watch the trailer and let us know what you think in the comments below.
