We’re not sure why Gael Garcia Bernal has been slumming it in “Letters To Juliet” or in the upcoming romcom/dramedy “Earthbound” with Kate Hudson, but it appears that he’s snapped out of it.
Deadline reports that Bernal and Israeli actress Hani Furstenberg will star in the thriller “The Loneliest Planet.” The story follow “a young couple [that] backpacks through the Caucasus Mountains in the Republic of Georgia. When they hire a local guide to make through the isolated wilderness, their relationship is tested in ways they never anticipated.” Meh. Feels like we’ve seen this one before, but we’ll give a shot.
The film was written and will be directed by Julia Loktev (“Day Night Day Night”) and is based off a short story by Tom Bissell. Production starts next week in the Republic of Georgia.
It's not a thriller. The script is far more nuanced than that would suggest. If you've seen DAY NIGHT DAY NIGHT, you know what I mean. Loktev is a serious, artistic, and original filmmaker.
